If you have ever decorated a room, you know that sometimes the basics just don’t cut it. Though some rooms may be complete with just a few odd pieces of furniture and a painting or two, others require something more, like some occasional furniture. Occasional pieces are small pieces of furniture that can be put to different uses as the occasion calls for it, hence the name.  There are many different types and styles to choose from, so it can be quite baffling though. Some popular types are:

Coat Racks

You may think of a coat rack as simply a functional tool for cold weather, but in reality, if chosen with proper care, it can be a wonderful piece of occasional furniture. Available in a wide variety of materials, ranging from metal to wood, a coat rack can being a real kick to the right room. When not in use, a coat rack can also be used to display other items, such as fancy hats or pretty scarves.

Stylish Chairs

You may not think of a chair as a piece of occasional furniture, but in fact it is. A chair does not necessarily need to match the other pieces of furniture in a room. It can be an accent piece that is a real conversation starter, especially those old style classic pieces you can often find in antique shops.

Small End Tables

Tables are among the most useful kind of occasional furniture out there. When not in use for other purposes, they can be used to display knick knacks, pictures or other treasures. In a pinch, they can be used to hold an hors d’oeuvres tray.

Decorative Chests

Another highly functional, practical yes attractive option in occasional furniture, a trunk can be used to both store things, such as throw pillows and blankets and to decorate a room. Large, strong trunks can be used as extra seating in times when you have more people about. Flat topped trunks can be used as an additional end or coffee table, should the need arise.

These are just a few of the occasional furniture options out there. Nightstands, commodes and even wine racks are other, very popular pieces to accent a room. They are all very functional pieces of furniture that are also lovely to look at. Adding any one of these pieces to a room can help give it a little extra something, add some interest and make it just a bit more pulled together.
